How Snapchat follower counts work
Snapchat calls followers subscribers. Only public profiles have them: creators, brands and anyone who turned on a public profile. A normal account has friends instead, and nobody else can see how many.
The figure we read is the one Snapchat puts on the public profile at snapchat.com/add/username. Snapchat rounds it to the nearest 100 and puts out a new one about once a day, not live. Between those figures, the big number on a profile is our live estimate at the account's recent pace, with Snapchat's own figure right under it. We tracked when those updates land in why your Snapchat follower count is not updating.
Want a number that moves by the second? Spotlight views do: the live Spotlight view counter reads them from Snapchat every few seconds.
How often we check
We check any profile someone has open and the biggest accounts in the list every 5 minutes, and the rest of the list every 15 minutes, so a new number usually shows up here within minutes of Snapchat putting it on the public profile.
Each profile shows when we last checked it and when we last saw the number change. The "Changes we saw" chart keeps one value per day.
Snapchat puts out one new figure a day, so between figures the big number on a profile is our estimate: it moves at the pace of the account's figures over the last two weeks and eases into each new figure when it comes out. The figure Snapchat shows is right under it, with the time we read it.
Put it on your stream or website
Open a profile and use Embed code for a small widget on a website, or OBS link for a browser source. Both pick up new numbers by themselves and never show ads.
