How to check a repository's star count

Paste the repository link, like github.com/vercel/next.js, or type owner/name. Searching by name works too. You get the exact number of stars, which GitHub itself rounds to something like 142k on the repository page.

Star history

GitHub does not publish a star history, so we build our own: every repository opened here gets one star count per day, and the repositories in the list above are checked every 6 hours. The chart grows from the first day a repository was looked up here.

Follower counts

Switch the search to People to look up an account. Followers come from GitHub's API and are updated every 6 hours. When GitHub's API is busy and we have no count for an account yet, we show the rounded number from its profile page for a while, and say so on the page.

How fresh the numbers are

A repository page asks GitHub every 5 minutes while it is open. If our server cannot reach GitHub, your browser asks GitHub directly instead, which GitHub allows 60 times an hour per visitor.

Show the count on your site

Open Put this count on your site or stream on a repository page for an embed code and an OBS link. It updates by itself and never shows ads. GitHub READMEs do not allow embeds like this, so link to the repository's page here instead.

Questions

Is the star count exact?

Yes. It is the exact number GitHub keeps for the repository. The repository page on GitHub rounds it, for example to 142k.

Can I see the star history of any repository?

We keep one number per day for every repository opened here, starting the day it was first opened. Older history would need GitHub's full list of stargazers, which takes thousands of requests for a big repository.

Why did the star count go down?

People can unstar a repository at any time, and GitHub removes stars from deleted and spam accounts. Small drops are normal.

Do private repositories work?

No. Only public repositories and accounts have a public count.
