How the live view count works
YouTube updates the public view count of a video in bursts, and on big videos it can lag behind by a few minutes. This page asks for fresh numbers every few seconds and shows an estimated live view count, so you can watch views, likes and comments move almost in real time.
The numbers are estimates built on YouTube's own figures, so they can be slightly ahead of or behind the count on the video page. Dislikes are an estimate from the Return YouTube Dislike project, because YouTube no longer shows them publicly.

Paste a YouTube link into the search box (watch, youtu.be, Shorts and live links all work) or type part of the title. The address of this page switches to that video, so you can bookmark it or share it.

How YouTube counts views since August 24, 2026

On August 24, 2026 YouTube changed what counts as a public view. A view now counts the moment a video starts to play, from the very first frame, for every format: regular videos, Shorts, podcasts and live streams. Shorts already worked this way since 2025, and the rest followed. YouTube announced the change on August 17 and confirmed the rollout on August 27 in its post on the YouTube Help forum.
What it means for the numbers on this page:
- View counts now climb faster than before, so a video can reach its next milestone sooner than its old pace suggested. Keep that in mind when you compare growth from before and after August 24.
- This counter follows the public view count, the one YouTube shows under the video. Nothing changed on our side.
- The old kind of view still exists as "engaged views" in YouTube Analytics (Advanced mode). Only the channel owner can see it.
- Earnings did not change. YouTube still pays on engaged views and engaged watch hours, and the Partner Program requirements are the same.
