What the estimate assumes

RPM is what a creator actually gets per 1,000 views, after YouTube keeps its share, and it already counts the views that showed no ad. YouTube does not publish RPMs. The ranges below are typical of what creators share publicly, not official numbers.

Viewers in other countries earn less per view, because advertisers pay less to reach them. We multiply the US range by a rough factor per country:

Shorts are paid from a shared pool, and creators report much lower RPMs for them. We use $0.03 to $0.10 per 1,000 Shorts views for US viewers, times the same country factor.

We measure the views per day ourselves, from how fast a channel's total view count grows. The big channels on our list get a reading about twice a day; any other channel gets a new one when someone looks it up again 12 or more hours later. Until there are 12 hours between two readings the page uses the lifetime average (total views divided by the channel's age) and says so. The Shorts share comes from the channel's latest uploads when we can see them.

How much do YouTubers make?

Less than most people think, at least from ads. Ad income comes down to three things: how many views you get, what your videos are about and where your viewers live. Per view, a finance channel watched mostly in the US can earn around 50 times more than a gaming channel watched mostly in India.

How much does YouTube pay per 1,000 views?

Creators usually report an RPM between $1 and $6 on long videos with mostly US viewers. Finance, business and tech channels often get well over $10, while gaming, music and kids channels often stay under $2. Viewers in India, Indonesia or the Philippines tend to be worth about a tenth of US viewers.

How much do you make with 1 million views?

On long videos with an RPM of $1 to $6, one million views earns about $1,000 to $6,000. The same million views on Shorts earns more like $30 to $100.

How to get paid by YouTube

You need to join the YouTube Partner Program: 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 public watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million public Shorts views in the last 90 days. Creators get 55% of the ad revenue on their long videos and 45% of their share of the Shorts pool. YouTube pays once a month through AdSense, as soon as your balance passes the payment threshold.

CPM and RPM are not the same

CPM is what advertisers pay for 1,000 ad views, before YouTube takes its cut. RPM is what you get per 1,000 views of your videos, after YouTube's cut and including the views without ads. RPM is always the lower number, and it is the one that tells you what you earn.

What this calculator leaves out

Yes. Shorts ads go into a shared pool, and creators in the Partner Program get 45% of their share of it. Per view that is far less than long videos: creators commonly report $0.03 to $0.10 per 1,000 Shorts views.

How accurate is this?

It is a ballpark, not a statement. Real RPMs move with the time of year (the last months of the year pay best, January pays least), video length, the number of ad breaks and who is watching. If you have your RPM from YouTube Studio, type it in and the estimate gets much closer.

When does YouTube pay?

Once a month through AdSense, as soon as your earnings pass the payment threshold (100 US dollars in most countries). You first need to be accepted into the YouTube Partner Program.
