How the clock works
The Office for National Statistics publishes public sector net debt every month, about three weeks after the month ends. Net debt is gross debt minus the public sector's cash and other liquid assets; this series leaves out the public sector banks. The clock starts from the latest month and adds the average change per second of the last 12 months: £2,489.
Between two months the real debt does not move in a straight line, so the live number is an estimate. It usually lands close to the next official figure, not exactly on it.
