How the clock works
Eurostat publishes the general government gross debt of every EU country once a quarter, about three and a half months after the quarter ends. It covers central, state and local government and the social security funds, measured the way the EU's budget rules define it (Maastricht debt). The clock starts from the latest quarter and adds the average change per second of the last 12 months: Kč 9,279.
Between two quarters the real debt does not move in a straight line, so the live number is an estimate. It usually lands close to the next official figure, not exactly on it.
