How the Steam player count works

The number comes from Steam's own API (ISteamUserStats/GetNumberOfCurrentPlayers), fetched through our server every 15 seconds. It counts everyone who has the game open on Steam right now. Steam itself updates that number every few minutes, so the counter can sit still for a while and then jump.

On top of the live number we keep a history for a few hundred games: the most played games on Steam, everything that has been in the top 100 since we started tracking, and games people look up here. Every one of them is checked every 10 minutes. The history chart shows those readings for the last 48 hours and the hourly peak and average for up to 90 days, so you can see when a game is busiest and whether it is growing or fading.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this work for any Steam game?
Yes, for any game with a public Steam App ID. Some very small, region locked or delisted apps return no count because Steam does not publish one for them.
How do I find a game's Steam App ID?
Open the game on the Steam store and look at the address bar. The number right after /app/ is the App ID, for example 730 in store.steampowered.com/app/730/. You can paste the whole link into the search box.
Why is the count different from SteamDB or Steam Charts?
Everyone reads the same Steam API, just at different moments. Peaks and averages also depend on how often a site checks, so two sites can show a slightly different 24 hour peak for the same game.
How far back does the player history go?
We keep every 10 minute reading for 48 hours and an hourly peak and average for 90 days. The history starts on the day we began tracking a game, so a game we only just added has a short chart for now.
What does "highest we recorded" mean?
It is the highest player count we have seen for that game since we started tracking it. A game can have had a bigger peak before that, for example at launch, which is why we don't call it the all-time peak.
