How the TikTok follower gap is worked out
Take the default pair, Khaby Lame against Charli D'Amelio. The box in the middle shows Khaby's followers minus Charli's, about 2.7 million in his favour when we wrote this, and names him as the leader. Every 2 seconds that number goes onto the chart.
On TikTok one viral video can add a few hundred thousand followers in a day, so this is where the chart earns its keep. If Charli gets a hit and starts catching up, the line bends down toward zero. If it crosses zero she has passed him and the leader name flips. A flat line means both grow at the same speed.
The chart holds 600 readings, about 20 minutes at this refresh rate. Reloading clears it, and it pauses while the tab is in the background.
